Monika Kornilova

Monika Kornilova is an artist and curator based in Vilnius. Her artistic practice encompasses painting, printmaking and site-specific installations, combining DIY aesthetics with traditional painting techniques. Recently, the artist has been exploring haptic visuality and the connections between the concept of flâneuse and cultural heritage. Visuality, which is full of marks, scratches, mist – something which obscures the image – is forcing us to focus our attention and mobilise all our senses to compensate for the visual interference.

In Kornilova’s works, the marks suggest touch, and the outlines of objects merge, metamorphosing into new meanings, other images and associations. In her artistic research the artist is looking at a certain way of being, closely associated with the concept of flâneuse and focusing on experiences in places that can be associated with the definition of a resort.

While gathering splinters of specific time and place she is questioning the possibilities of preservation of memory, relying on tactile and multisensory experience, and reflecting on the connections between personal and historical memory.
