Currently resident in Kintai Arts, Canadian artist Michelle Cieloszczyk invites everyone to take part in a ceremonial farewell of the mythological figure โ€“ the goddess Marzanna (known to us as Morฤ—) โ€“ into the water.

During her residency at Kintai, Michelle is investigating the role of suffering and sacrifice in religious and cultural practices by sculpting a Marzanna doll made of branches, straw, and plaster. Marzanna becomes the main protagonist of the performance-ritual offered by the artist.ย

In many Eastern European countries such as Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia and others, Marzanna is a goddess of winter, death, and disease. In Baltic culture, Morฤ— – closely related to these mythological beings known across Europe by names beginning with the roots Mar- or Mor-โ€”is a local equivalent of the goddess Marzanna. In pagan tradition, this sacrificial woman is burned or drowned as an effigy on the first day of spring.

The artist invites everyone to join the farewell ritual as Morฤ— is sent off into the lagoon. For Michelle, this pagan ceremony takes on a new symbolic meaning. In the face of ongoing war, suffering, and injustice, the ritual, held on the shortest night of the summer, becomes an offering for justice.ย
