I make darkroom prints, wooden picture frames, and strange or experimental systems of display. In this process of manual labor, I seek mental emptiness \u2013 first, because I don\u2019t want my own ideas to infiltrate someone else\u2019s work, and second, because I don\u2019t want to interfere with my body\u2019s intuition. In this ideal state of emptiness there are no thoughts, only actions, my hands synchronized so intimately with the tools and materials, it is as though the boundaries between them dissolve. When I make a mistake, it is because I am distracted by a passing thought, a hallucination, a distant memory that bubbles up and colors my perception of objects around me.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s\">\n<p class=\"p1\">A long time ago I remember picking up a rock and giving it to someone I loved. They held onto the rock and cared for it, letting it soak up the significance of our affection. Rocks are fascinating because they can be known, appreciated, and used in innumerable ways. They are a kind of shifter, an empty vessel that takes on human projections. I am fascinated by this conflict between the object and the ideas we attach to them through language and gesture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The photographs in \u201cThinking Gets Me In Trouble\u201d are of simple things: wood, stone, water, shadow, light, paper, and so on. I have printed and framed the works by hand, often leaving traces of the process like an index of my humanity, my imperfections. I\u2019m hesitant to burden the work with intellectual projections but delight in the ephemeral narratives that have emerged in relation to these works. What a joy, to watch such meaning come and go, leaving the object in its wake.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s\"><strong>About the artist:<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s\">Sam Margevicius is an American artist working in and around photography. His work privileges process, emphasizing ideas that emerge in dialogue with materials, environments, and audience. Margevicius works with framing, installation, performance, and bookmaking to inform his photographs and offer meaningful contexts.
